The Stations of the Cross by Dušan Jurkovič
Jurkovič situated his Stations of the Cross northeast of the church. On the architecturally designed horseshoe-shaped path, he irregularly placed thirteen stops, varying in shape, which seemed to emerge from the forest on the right side. Eight of them descend from the top of the church, while the ninth stop rises on a massive stone terrace, which is ascended by a series of steps. The termination of the Stations of the Cross forms the existing rotunda, incorporated into the cemetery grounds. Inside is a stone relief of the Laying in the Grave. The Stations of the Cross were built gradually from 1904 until the Second World War. The hardships of the war and the associated lack of funding disrupted this magnificent plan of Jurkovič. Many of the planned buildings had to be abandoned, such as the assembly hall, the bell tower, the chapel of Saints Cyril and Methodius, the commercial bazaar and many others.
The individual stops are roughly of three types. They are designed as open chapels, consisting of a wall of cut stone blocks with a mosaic image and a lomenica shelter, usually resting on beams. The end of the wall is either arched or triangular, and the canopies are covered with lintels. Blue scale tiles also cover the arch or gable of the rear wall adjoining the cottage roof with a lomenica. The roof is supported by two columns with brackets. These wooden columns in the stone plinth have polychromy in red, yellow, blue and green, also the lomenica. If the picture wall is terminated by an arch, the stone cross on the roof of the cottage is protected by an Art Nouveau curved plate. The triangular gable is topped with a cross. The roof is lower, spread over three bays, the central one being higher and projecting. The floor of the chapels is of stone steps, and there is a kneeler in front of the image. The painting decoration was entrusted to Jozko, who also designed the first glass mosaics of the Passion scenes. B. Škarda from Brno. Later on, J. Köhler continued the colourful ceramic mosaics.

Lookout tower on Svatý Hostýn
There is a beautiful view of Bystřice pod Hostýnem, Svatý Kopeček near Olomouc, Jeseníky, Zlín, Hranice na Moravě and in very good conditions you can also see Pálava or the Slovak Tatras from the stone lookout tower of Emperor Franz Joseph I. on the Hostýn hill (735 m above sea level). There is not only the Basilica of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary at the pilgrimage site of Moravian Hostýn (735 m above sea level), but also the Lookout Tower of Emperor Franz Joseph I, with the Chapel of the Holy Cross on the ground floor. The lookout tower was built in 1897-98, when Emperor Franz Joseph I visited Bystřice pod Hostýnem. It was opened on 14 September 1898 and this event had to be without much glory, the country was just after the death of the monarch’s wife Elizabeth.
Originally the tower was up to 27 metres high, but in 1915 it was lowered for safety reasons. The present height of the tower is 15 metres. The observation deck, which is 12 metres high, is reached by 63 steps.
The tower’s ground plan consists of two unevenly sized circles of masonry made of hard Hostýn stone. The larger one has a diameter of about seven metres, the smaller one about three metres. The thickness of the masonry is 70 cm to one metre. The entrance to the lookout tower is on the north side, where there is a spiral iron staircase leading to the room of the first Hostýn museum and then to the observation deck with a telescope at a height of 12 metres.
There is a chapel of the Holy Cross below the lookout tower on the ground floor. The entrance from the south side is formed by a hand-forged iron door, which is the work of the artistic blacksmith Mr. Skřehota from Bystřice pod Hostýnem. There is an altar opposite the door and above it a sandstone statue of Our Lady of Sorrows and a marble cross. It was made by master Ferdinand Neumann from Kroměříž and installed on 22 June 1898. The round windows were decorated with a glass sculpture by B. Škarda from Brno.

The “Hostýn in the Light of Archaeological Sources” exhibit reveals the strategic importance of this elevated point, where cultures and peoples succeeded one another. Visitors will find artifacts such as mammoth bones, bronze axes, and iron arrowheads, testifying to the rich past of this place. Emphasis is placed on the Slavic colonization in the 6th and 7th centuries and on key historical events, including the campaign of the 13th century, which shaped Svatý Hostýn. Models of castles and fortresses in the Hostýn Hills complement the picture of the region’s strategic significance.
The adjoining “Hostýn in the Light of Historical Sources” exhibit focuses on the development of Svatý Hostýn from the 16th century to the present. It documents the transformation of the site from a military outpost to a significant pilgrimage center. The architectural changes of the basilica and the statue of the Virgin Mary of Svatý Hostýn are described in detail, as is the history of the Matice svatohostýnská and the personalities who contributed to the development of Hostýn. This part of the exhibit serves as a comprehensive chronicle, connecting the past with the present.

The gallery of Jurkovič Hall is dedicated to the natural riches of the Hostýn Hills. The ruins of Obřany Castle, nestled on a steep hill amidst the Hostýn Hills, offer a fascinating glimpse into Gothic architecture and medieval Moravian history. Founded around 1365 by Boček of Kunštát, this castle, despite its unfinished fate and subsequent demise during the Hussite Wars, remains a silent witness to a time when strategic hills served as strongholds and noble residences.
Architecturally, Obřany belongs to the type of castle built on an elongated ridge, with defensive towers at both ends. This type of castle, having its analogies in Czech Trosky or Slovak Kamenica, reflects specific construction techniques and defensive strategies of the Gothic period. Even though the castle was likely never completed according to the original plan, it served as an administrative center for the estate for about half a century, testifying to its importance in the regional context.
Today, the remnants of the wall and a cylindrical tower remain, allowing visitors to partially imagine the original appearance of the structure. The ruins, situated at an altitude long considered the highest in Moravia (although this primacy has since been reassessed), offer breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The origins of Lukov Castle date back to the first third of the 13th century, evidenced by fragments of stonework that attest to the activity of stonemasons from the Velehrad workshop. Its strategic location attracted powerful families, including the Šternberks, Kunštáts, and Nekš of Landek, who significantly influenced its development. The Renaissance era brought extensive renovations, adapting the castle to the contemporary demands of comfortable living and representation.
Lukov Castle was the scene of significant historical events, including its capture and burning by the armies of Matthias Corvinus during the Bohemian-Hungarian Wars, and the Wallachian uprisings against the Habsburgs during the Thirty Years’ War. The Wallensteins, who owned the castle in the 17th century, left a distinct mark on its history. The Swedish occupation and subsequent fire marked the beginning of the castle’s decline, culminating in its abandonment at the end of the 18th century.

Králky: Paleogene Rock Formations with an Aristocratic Legacy in the Heart of the Hostýn Hills
The Králky Natural Monument, declared in 1987, represents a unique geological and historical phenomenon situated on the southern slopes of the Hostýn Hills, near the majestic ruins of Lukov Castle. This site, characterized by sandstone and conglomerate rock formations, offers not only a glimpse into the region's geological past but also into the aristocratic history of the 19th century.
Geologically, these are Paleogene benches of the Lukov layers, formed during the Tertiary period. The rock formations of Králky, reaching heights of up to 10 meters and lengths of 38 meters, are composed of sandstones and conglomerates, whose structure reveals the layering of sediments and the geological history of the area. In the upper part of the conglomerate rocks, there is a small fissure cave, which testifies to the complexity of the geological processes that shaped this site.
Historically, Králky became a popular excursion destination for the Seilern noble family from Lešná Castle. In the 19th century, they had seats carved into the rock, used for rest and contemplation during their frequent visits. This aristocratic legacy gives the site a unique atmosphere and combines natural beauty with historical context. The folk legend of the Wallachian hunting court, which is said to have convened here, adds another layer of cultural significance to the place.
Králky is located on the top of a ridge at an altitude of 400 to 478 meters and is surrounded by a mixed forest that completes the picturesque landscape. The green-marked Lukov educational trail passes through a rocky fissure and leads from the Brzová Natural Monument to Lukov Castle, making Králky an ideal starting point for hiking and exploring the surroundings.
