The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Bučovice
Rising majestically on a hill above the town square, the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is the most valuable and prominent historical monument in Bučovice. With its towering twin steeples and monumental classical facade, it stands as a dominant landmark, arguably even more so than the nearby Mannerist chateau. The church's history is a story of architectural evolution. It was originally completed in the Baroque style in 1641, following the design of the renowned architect Giovanni Giacomo Tencalli. Over a century later, it underwent significant alterations, and in the 19th century, it was expanded with side naves and given its distinctive twin-towered classical entrance. The interior was also beautifully enhanced with intricate stucco figure decorations by the artist J. Schubert.
For those following the Cyril and Methodius Route, the church holds a special significance. The square in front of the entrance is adorned with a collection of impressive sandstone statues of saints. Among them is a cherished sculpture of Saints Cyril and Methodius, a poignant reminder of their enduring spiritual and cultural legacy in the region. The statuary group also includes depictions of St. John of Nepomuk, St. John Sarkander, and St. Florian, all of whom add to the sacred beauty of this historic site.

The Stations of the Cross in Bukovany: A Modern Pilgrimage Through Art
In the serene landscape of the Hodonín district, a unique and powerful work of art awaits visitors to the villages of Bukovany, Ostrovánek, and Nechvalín. The Stations of the Cross in Bukovany is a non-traditional collection of 14 monumental concrete sculptures created by the artist Lubomír Jarcovják between 1999 and 2009. This is not a typical pilgrimage site but a thoughtful and modern interpretation of a timeless spiritual journey.
Set on a sloping plot surrounded by forests and fields, the installation harmonizes with its natural environment, offering a breathtaking view of the countryside. The statues, crafted from raw-cast concrete with additional elements of wood, iron, glass, and resin, are simple yet powerful. Their geometric shapes and unworked texture emphasize a profound artistic and philosophical theme, focusing on the concepts of “damnation” and “grace.”
Conceived through a collaboration between the artist and the former mayor of Bukovany, this sacred art project was intentionally placed in the open landscape to give it a universally human meaning. The Stations of the Cross were officially blessed in a ceremony on June 6, 2010. A visit here offers a quiet moment of reflection, blending artistic expression with a spiritual pilgrimage in a setting of natural beauty.

The Chapel of St. John Paul II in Bukovany
Tucked away in the beautiful landscape of South Moravia, the Chapel of St. John Paul II in Bukovany stands as a modern testament to faith and community spirit. Completed and consecrated in 2013, this chapel is far more than just a new place of worship; it's a poignant and inspiring stop for pilgrims and visitors alike.
A Sanctuary with a Unique Relic
The chapel’s dedication to Pope John Paul II is deeply meaningful, particularly as it was completed just before his canonization. Its greatest treasure is a small but powerful relic enshrined within the main altar—a piece of clothing stained with a drop of his blood from the 1981 assassination attempt. This sacred artifact makes the chapel a rare and significant pilgrimage site, offering a direct link to the profound faith and suffering of one of the 20th century’s most beloved spiritual leaders.
A Symbol of Community and Modern Faith
The chapel’s existence is a testament to the perseverance of the local community, which had been without a place of worship for nearly 800 years. Funded primarily by Bukovany native Josef Kouřil and supported by generous donations from local residents, the chapel is a true community effort. Designed by architect Jaroslav Vlach, it serves as a multi-purpose spiritual hub, welcoming people of all faiths for services, as well as hosting concerts and exhibitions.
The Chapel of St. John Paul II is a beautiful and inspiring complement to the nearby Stations of the Cross, offering a complete and modern pilgrimage experience on the Cyril and Methodius Route.
