It is possible to turn right at the signpost ROVNINA – ROZHL. and along the dirt road for about 1.6 km you will reach the chapel of St. Roch and after another 0.5 km you will find the Rochus Open Air Museum. You can return to the trail along Vinohradská Street, which will lead you to Mařatice. The trail extends for about 4 km.

Take enough food and drink with you, as there are sections of the trail without the possibility of buying food during the hike.

Park Rochus

Chapel of St. Roch

The chapel’s origins date back to a dire time when the leading townsmen, led by Zacharias Guchs, donated their wealth to create a sanctuary dedicated to the patrons of plague victims—St. Roch, St. Sebastian, and St. Rosalie. With the approval of Bishop Karl of Lichtenstein, construction began in 1680, but the journey to completion was fraught with challenges. A catastrophic fire in 1681 delayed progress, but by 1687 the chancel and tower were completed. The final additions, including the nave, narthex, and a hermitage for church wardens, were finished by 1715.

The chapel’s story took a turbulent turn in 1786 when Emperor Joseph II deconsecrated it and sold it to the town, where it served as a powder store for the local garrison. However, the chapel’s significance as a cultural and spiritual landmark was revived after the First World War thanks to the efforts of Archbishop Dr. Antonín Cyril Stojan and dedicated locals such as Ing. Vojtěch Stancl and JUDr. Miroslav Skácel. In 1931, the chapel was rededicated, and pilgrimages began once more.

Following the Second World War, the chapel underwent a dignified restoration between 1965 and 1968 under the guidance of the parish office in Sady and conservation authorities, with the support of the community. It was rededicated on September 29, 1968, marking the 35th anniversary of Archbishop Stojan’s death.

Today, the Chapel of St. Roch, St. Sebastian, and St. Rosalie stands as a remarkable example of classical architecture and a symbol of Moravian heritage. Declared a cultural monument, it not only preserves the history of Uherské Hradiště but also enhances the beauty of the landscape it proudly dominates. The Height of St. Methodius

The site is home to one of the first brick churches built north of the Danube, dating back to the turn of the 8th and 9th centuries. It’s an important reminder of the region’s role in the spread of Christianity across Europe. The complex on Sadská Hill, in modern-day Uherské Hradiště, was originally part of a thriving ecclesiastical hub. Known locally as “Derfle,” the area is where Christian missionaries are thought to have laid the foundations for early Christian worship in Moravia.

The archaeological findings here are truly remarkable. The site includes three construction phases spanning the 9th century, with a baptistery and a large burial ground. Archaeologists have uncovered 87 graves, many containing valuable burial items, which suggest that the area was a place of significant importance. Among these graves, the burial of a prominent figure, possibly Prince Svatopluk himself, is believed to have taken place in a chapel with a burial chamber.

On the northern side of the complex, walls separated a cluster of 12 log buildings where craftsmen and their families lived and worked, while a larger building likely served as a gathering place for the faithful and a place of instruction for priests. The site also includes a well and a paved road connecting these different sections, further emphasizing the organized nature of the community.

Notable finds at the site include a lead cross with a Greek liturgical inscription and a writing tablet, suggesting that Byzantine missionaries were present here, bringing their religious and cultural influence to the region.

The Height of St. Methodius was abandoned in the 13th century, but it remains an essential part of the region’s heritage. Today, visitors can explore the reconstructed floor plans of the church buildings and learn more about the significance of this freely accessible archaeological site through informative displays and signage.
