Svatý Kopeček near Olomouc is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the Czech Republic. The local basilica is a gem of Baroque architecture. On the way to Olomouc, you will not only enjoy breathtaking views of the countryside – on one side of the Haná River, on the other side of the Jeseníky Mountains, but also several places that are definitely worth a longer stop. It is Velká Bystřice, a village known for its adherence to Haná traditions, or of course the city of Olomouc itself – the historical centre with the unique Holy Trinity Column, the astronomical clock, a set of Baroque fountains, the Morava River, forts, beautiful parks and mysterious romantic streets.

Basilica minor of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary
The Basilica on Svatý Kopeček is an unmissable dominant feature of the whole surroundings of Olomouc. The Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary on Svatý Kopeček has been the destination of thousands of pilgrims for centuries, and even today it is one of the most famous and most visited pilgrimage sites in the Czech Republic. According to the legend, the pilgrimage site was founded by Jan Andrýsek, a townsman and wine merchant from Olomouc, by building a chapel, which the Virgin Mary requested in a dream. The main pilgrimage takes place on the Feast of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary (31 May), on the Sunday after the Feast of the Assumption (15 August) and on the following Monday and Tuesday and also on the last Sunday in October.
The church was built by the Premonstratensians in the 17th and 18th centuries on the site of a chapel destroyed by the Swedes. The orientation of the temple is unique, as the main axis does not run from east to west, but the temple faces the mother monastery Hradisko. The priest who blessed the faithful from the altar is said to have blessed the monastery as well when the doors were open. In 1995, Pope John Paul II elevated the church to the status of Basilica Minor. This important place of pilgrimage has undergone a long-term reconstruction, the second stage of which was completed in 2021. Thanks to the reconstruction, this Baroque jewel is now in perfect condition and the previously closed areas are now open to visitors. For example, a new tour circuit that takes visitors to the choir, where they can enjoy a unique view of the cathedral, also takes them through the previously inaccessible representative halls. Visitors can also visit the Svatý Kopeček Museum, which displays monstrances, reliquaries, mass vestments and an exhibition of pilgrimage. The museum tour has twenty stops with descriptions and QR codes, with the first stop located outside the basilica.

Zoo Olomouc
Over several decades of its existence, the zoo has achieved significant success in breeding and propagating exotic animals. In attractive and animal-adapted spaces, breeding of antelopes, giraffes, monkeys and beasts takes place, and the giant bird aviary or the joint enclosure of polar bears and polar wolves is also unique. The dominant feature of the zoo is the 32-metre high observation tower. From the upper observation platform you can watch the animals in the zoo, admire the Basilica of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary or watch the panorama of Olomouc and its surroundings. The Olomouc Zoo boasts a number of rarities. For example, the darkened bat pavilion, illuminated only by the starry sky and a few spot coloured lights, provides a home for animals with nocturnal activity, especially the very rare golden fruit bats. Only 120 cm high glass separates them from visitors, the rest of the space is not covered by anything. Thus, the calloons can fly freely right over the heads of the visitors.
You can also experience adventure in the large natural enclosure of red-faced macaques. This is one of the most attractive expositions, complete with a wooden footbridge suspended 7 m above the valley. Visitors can walk through the enclosure first over a bridge and then freely along a path directly among the animals. Another enrichment of the Olomouc zoo is a large cheetah enclosure with a glassed-in view with seating and a large natural enclosure of lynxes, whose breeding has a long tradition here. A footbridge for visitors runs through the enclosure, offering an unusual view of these elegant animals. The zoo also boasts a successful breeding program for Manchurian leopards, one of the rarest felines in the world. The leopard enclosure is designed in the form of a cave.

Fort Radíkov
The fortress from 1871-1876 was built as part of the "Imperial-Royal Olomouc Fortress". It is a one-valve artillery fort, it is architecturally and historically unique fortress object. Currently, the fort is managed by the Fort Radíkov o.s. civic association and offers other leisure activities besides history. These include not only guided tours, but also a number of experiential activities. You can shoot air rifles, try throwing knives, geocaching, metal detector "treasure hunting", Canadian woodcutting games or even just roast sausages on the fire.

Brewery Tvarg
The brewery builds on the history of cheese curds and beer production in Velká Bystřice, where Olomoucké tvarůžky was commonly produced in the past. This is good news for all lovers of Olomouc cheese curds - they are now (2021) also produced in Velké Bystřice under the time-tested and well-worn name Tvargle. Olomouc cheese curds are of course made according to original recipes and from local ingredients. The Tvarg microbrewery produces not only classic lager, but also top-fermented beers such as IPA and ALE. The brewery and cheese factory with restaurant and summer seating can be found in the restored, listed brewery cellars in the vicinity of Bystřice Castle. Both establishments can also be visited during regularly organized excursions with tasting.

Town Hall with the astronomical clock
The Town Hall building, one of the few in the Czech Republic, still serves its purpose today - as the seat of the municipal officials. There is also an exhibition on the history of the town, the astronomical clock and the town hall. All the exhibitions are freely accessible during the municipality's office hours and during guided tours "Olomouc in a nutshell" with a climb up the town hall tower. In the arcade of the town hall you will find the tourist information centre. The Olomouc Astronomical Clock is set into the northern facade of the town hall. Today's appearance of the astronomical clock dates back to the 1950s, as it was damaged considerably during the Second World War. It is certainly an interesting proof of the propaganda role of the official art of that time - socialist realism.
The mosaic decoration consists of medallions on the sides of the niche, depicting works characteristic of the months of the year, and a calendar listing the dates of events considered significant by the communist propaganda of the time. Karel Svolinský, the author of the design, applied the folkloric motif of the ride of the kings at the top of the niche. The first written mention of the original astronomical clock dates back to 1519. The clock has been rebuilt several times throughout its history and equipped with various types of moving puppets. The most artistically valuable was probably the Baroque adaptation designed by the painter Jan Kryštof Handke.

Column of the Holy Trinity - UNESCO Perhaps the most famous monument of Olomouc is the monumental Baroque Holy Trinity Column in Horní náměstí (Upper Square), which was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000. The column was constructed in 1716-1754 as a flamboyant celebration of the Catholic Church and faith, partly prompted by a sense of gratitude for the end of the plague. The column is 35 m high and is the tallest sculpture in the Czech Republic. The column is adorned with more than forty statues, dominated by the gilded copper statues of the Holy Trinity (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) accompanied by the Archangel Gabriel on the top and the statue of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary on the shaft below. The column also contains a small chapel with reliefs depicting the sacrifices to the gods Cain, Abel, Noah and Abraham. It also depicts the death of Jesus on the cross with the cities of Olomouc and Jerusalem in the background. The chapel is open in the season and you can also have a guided tour.

Archbishop's Palace
The Archbishop's Palace has been the residence of the bishops of Olomouc since its foundation and since 1777 also of the archbishops. The Archbishop's Residence is an important example of Baroque palace architecture in Moravia. In the course of its history, it has witnessed a number of important events, including the visit of Maria Theresa, the enthronement of Emperor Franz Joseph I, the conclusion of the peace treaty known as the "Olomouc Points" and the visit of Pope John Paul II. Currently, one tour circuit is open to the public, which includes the representative halls of the Archbishop's Palace located on the first floor. The interiors have preserved rich rococo, empire and neo-baroque decoration and are equipped with period furnishings. These rooms are linked to the most important events that took place in the building.

Archdiocesan Museum
The Archdiocesan Museum is housed in the buildings of the chapter deanery and in the grounds of the Premyslid Palace, a national cultural monument. The tour route also includes the Romanesque bishop's palace of Jindřich Zdík (Premyslid Palace) and the Chapel of St. Barbara. The museum's permanent exhibition introduces visitors to the spiritual culture of the Olomouc Archdiocese. The picture gallery contains top-quality paintings collected by the bishops of Olomouc since the 16th century. The building also includes the concert hall "Mozarteum", named in memory of the famous composer W. A. Mozart's stay here. The museum also offers 25 headphone audio guides in Czech, English, German and Polish.

This is the most important palace-type building monument in the Czech lands. According to research, the palace was built just before the middle of the 12th century.
To Glory and Praise – 1000 Years of Spiritual Culture in Moravia II
The permanent exhibition of the Archdiocesan Museum is arranged in two basic sections, the first of which, entitled Art of the Olomouc Diocese, is designed chronologically and includes all artistic disciplines (architectural fragments, painting, sculpture, artistic crafts – goldsmithing and textiles, etc.).
The next exhibition area, entitled The Collecting of the Bishops of Olomouc, presents a collection of paintings including important works of Italian, Dutch and Central European provenance. The origins of the collection date back to the 17th century and constitute one of the finest Central European collections of old paintings.
The museum has been renovated and was reopen in April 2023. It presents not only an extension of the existing exhibitions, but above all a new permanent exhibition – Here You Are. Saint Wenceslas Hill in the Changes of Centuries. A large part of it will be dedicated to new media and digital content – for example, virtual visualization of the area of St. Wenceslas Hill – in prehistoric, medieval and modern times, or, for example, an educational room with a virtual game console, where those interested will be able to experience the construction of the cathedral.

St. Wenceslas Cathedral
The monumental originally Romanesque cathedral from the 12th century is the most important church in Olomouc. It has undergone a number of reconstructions and today it towers over Olomouc in a neo-Gothic form. The Cathedral of St. Wenceslas belongs inseparably to the panorama of the city. The south tower, exactly 100.65 m high, is the highest church tower in Moravia (and the second highest in the Czech Republic). On the neo-Gothic altar is a reliquary with the relics of St. John Sarkander. The cathedral organ is one of the finest Romantic instruments in the country. In the cellar there is a crypt, which is open to the public.

Monastery Hillfort
The monastery was founded in the 11th century as the seat of the Benedictines. The castle has experienced many catastrophic events and has been destroyed several times. Today it has a Baroque appearance and has been the site of a military hospital for over 200 years. In one of its towers there is an exhibition of the history of the monastery.
Chapel of St. John Sarkander
On the site of today's chapel there used to be a town prison, where in 1620 the Catholic priest Jan Sarkander, to whom the chapel is dedicated, was subjected to the law of torture. Sarkander died here as a result of torture. The current appearance of the chapel dates from the beginning of the 20th century, when a radical neo-Baroque reconstruction was carried out. In the chapel's basement there is an original torture scraper and a well built over the "miraculous healing spring" from which Jan Sarkander drank in prison.
Church of St. Michael
The three Baroque domes of St. Michael's Church, the first domed building in Moravia, complete the characteristic panorama of the town. The church was built in the 13th century and after the Swedish occupation of the town in the 17th century it underwent significant reconstruction. The statues on its main facade are among the most valuable works of Olomouc Baroque sculpture. The hermitage is also a special feature of the church - there is an underground lake under the church. The pond serves for quiet contemplation, the spring never runs dry.
Church of St. Moritz
The Church of St. Moritz is one of the rarest buildings of the late Gothic period in Moravia. In 1412, a 46 m high tower was built, whose original purpose was probably to warn the inhabitants of the town against fires. The tower is equipped with an architecturally interesting double spiral staircase and today it serves as a lookout tower. The annual International Organ Festival (September) is intrinsically linked to the Church of St. Moritz, where you will find an organ that is one of the largest in Central Europe.

Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius The Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius is located in the Hejčín district of Olomouc. It is a church in the style of neoclassical modernism. The simple exterior of the church contrasts with the rich decoration. The church tower is 65 m high, and a bronze sculpture of Saints Cyril and Methodius is placed on the tower's facade.

Villa Primavesi
The Art Nouveau villa was built as a town residence for the banker family of Otto and Eugenie Primavesi in 1905-1906. It is a national cultural monument. The architects were able to masterfully combine the Art Nouveau style of the time with the modern current and the result was a richly articulated single-storey house with a high mansard roof. Leading artists of the time contributed to the interior decoration. Among them was family friend Anton Hanak, who designed for them the paneling of the dining room with the copper fountain "Living Water", a statue of a ponocny and many other works. Another important artist involved in the decoration of the villa was the artist and architect Josef Hoffman and the painter Gustav Klimt. You can see the Villa Primavesi during irregular interior tours. The villa also has a stylish café with comfortable seating both inside and in the garden.
