A Baroque Masterpiece in Osvětimany: The Church of Saint Havel

Perched majestically above the charming village of Osvětimany, the Church of Saint Havel stands as a prominent landmark and a testament to over 300 years of rich history and stunning Baroque architecture. This magnificent church was built on the site of an earlier wooden church, sadly lost to fire, with construction beginning in 1674. Its creation was financially supported by Jan Dětřich Petřvaldský z Petřvaldu, whose family crest – a proud peacock and column – is still visible in the stone archway above the main entrance, a timeless mark of their patronage. The church itself was blessed and consecrated in 1691, beginning its long and storied life.

The Church of Saint Havel is a remarkable example of Baroque design, featuring a centrally oriented layout on the plan of an equilateral cross. Its unique design includes transverse arms that are shortened and gracefully rounded into niches, creating a sense of intimate grandeur. Rising majestically above these cross arms is a soaring dome, drawing your gaze upwards. A “Chapel of Souls” (dušičková kaple) was later added to the southern nave, enriching the church’s spiritual space. Dominating the western facade is a robust, 38-meter-high prismatic tower, crowned by an elegant pear-shaped roof, a distinctive silhouette against the sky.

Step inside, and you’ll be transported to the 18th century, as most of the church’s interior furnishings hail from this period. The main altar is a focal point, featuring the relics of Saint Prokop the Martyr, Saint Urban, and Saint Theodora, beautifully framed by the altar painting of Saint Havel, the church’s patron saint. The sacred space is further adorned by two side altars dedicated to Saint John of Nepomuk and Saint Andrew the Apostle. Don’t miss the exquisite wooden pulpit, dating back to the 17th century, balanced by the baptismal font opposite it. Your eyes will also be drawn to the vibrant stained-glass windows and the impressive twelve-stop organ, crafted by the Nový Jičín organ builder Karel Neusser in 1889. Look up to admire the captivating frescoes in the church dome, painted in 1906 by Josef Kubíček from Uherské Hradiště, depicting the revered Saints Cyril and Methodius, active on the nearby Saint Clement Mountain.

Beneath the 19th-century ceramic paving, behind the presbytery, lies a sealed crypt – the resting place of local priests, officials from the Buchlov manor, and monks, adding another layer of historical intrigue. The parish of Osvětimany and its church were historically under the patronage of local lords residing in the fortified stronghold, later falling under the patronage of the Buchlov manor. Today, it belongs to the Roman Catholic Deanery in Uherské Hradiště, within the Olomouc Archbishopric.
