Explore the Architectural Marvel of Zelená Hora in Žďár nad Sázavou
Rising above the town of Žďár nad Sázavou, the Pilgrimage Church of Saint John of Nepomuk at Zelená hora (Green Mountain) stands as one of Central Europe's most original architectural treasures. Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1994, this iconic site is the crowning masterpiece of the genius architect Jan Blažej Santini-Aichl, commissioned by Abbot Václav Vejmluva of the local Cistercian monastery in the early 18th century.
Built between 1719 and 1722 in Santini’s unique Baroque Gothic style, the complex defies conventional architectural norms. The ground plan is constructed entirely around complex geometry and mystical symbolism based on the number five—referencing the five stars that legend says appeared above the saint’s body. The central star-shaped church is surrounded by a ring of cloisters (ambits) with five chapels and five gates, creating an atmosphere of lightness and dynamic vertical space.
As a major cultural highlight along the Cyril and Methodius Route, Zelená hora offers visitors an unforgettable fusion of history, art, and nature in the heart of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands (Vysočina). Surrounding the church, hikers can enjoy scenic walking paths, guided architectural tours, and serene views across the Žďárské vrchy region.

Discover the Historic Basilica of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Žďár nad Sázavou
Dominating the courtyards of the Žďár Chateau estate, the Basilica of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and Saint Nicholas (Bazilika Nanebevzetí Panny Marie a svatého Mikuláše) stands as one of the most prominent historic monuments in the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands (Vysočina). Originally founded in 1252 alongside the local Cistercian monastery, this monumental church is the second longest nave in Moravia after Velehrad. Elevated to the status of Basilica Minor by the Vatican in 2009, it represents an essential cornerstone of regional architectural heritage.
In the early 18th century, Abbot Václav Vejmluva entrusted the genius architect Jan Blažej Santini-Aichl with transforming the austere medieval abbey church into a captivating masterpiece of Baroque Gothic architecture. Santini sensitively preserved the massive 13th-century Gothic rib-vaulted structure while introducing dynamic stucco ornamentation, sweeping organ galleries, and an exquisite high altar designed in collaboration with sculptor Řehoř Thény and painter Michael Willmann.
As a major cultural highlight along the Cyril and Methodius Route, the basilica offers visitors a profound journey through Gothic masonry and Baroque artistic inventiveness. Located right beside the Museum of the New Generation and within walking distance of Zelená hora, it provides hikers and cultural travelers with an inspiring architectural pause before setting out across the Žďárské vrchy region.

Discover the Symbolism of the Lower Cemetery in Žďár nad Sázavou
Located just a short walk from the Žďár Chateau estate, the Lower Cemetery (Dolní hřbitov) is one of the most remarkable and unusual Baroque monuments in Central Europe. Built in 1709 under the vision of Abbot Václav Vejmluva and designed by the genius architect Jan Blažej Santini-Aichl, this unique burial ground was originally constructed as a plague cemetery during an impending epidemic, although the plague ultimately spared the town.
Santini designed the cemetery based on rich mystical symbolism and precise geometry, structuring the outer wall in the shape of an equilateral triangle to symbolize the Holy Trinity. Three oval chapels were placed at the vertices of the triangle, creating a harmonious layout centered around an inner courtyard. When the cemetery capacity needed expansion in the mid-18th century, a fourth chapel was added, subtly transforming the original triangular ground plan into a skull-like silhouette.
As an intriguing cultural stop along the Cyril and Methodius Route, the Lower Cemetery provides hikers and architecture lovers with a fascinating preview of Santini’s geometric mastery before ascending nearby Zelená hora. Set amidst peaceful highland fields, this serene landmark offers a unique window into Baroque philosophy, art, and landscape architecture in the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands (Vysočina).
