MARIANKA pilgrimage place

A national pilgrimage site, with a monumental basilica, in which you will find a richly decorated interior. On the feast of the Virgin Mary of the Seven Sorrows, an annual pilgrimage to the patron saint of Slovakia is held here every year. It is considered the oldest pilgrimage site in Slovakia, even in the former Kingdom of Hungary. Local legend tells of a robber who found a statuette and a spring beneath it, which springs here and supposedly has miraculous healing powers. The gracious statue is displayed on the main altar of the Basilica of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary from 1377. You will also find the Chapel of St. Anne, the Chapel of St. Studna, the Chapel of St. Florian, six Marian chapels from the 18th century, the Lourdes Grotto with many messages of thanks carved into stone slabs. The Calvary consists of 14 chapels of the Stations of the Cross decorated with fifty life-size statues.

The village of Marianka is one of the oldest pilgrimage sites in Slovakia. In the past, a Pauline monastery, founded in 1377 by King Louis I the Great, who worshipped the Marian cult and supported the Pauline order, stood in this valley. Even before the monastery was built, several legends were associated with this place about the statue of the Virgin Mary and the miraculous spring in which it was found. These legends already brought numerous pilgrims to this place at that time. After the monastery was founded and the church was built, it became a very popular pilgrimage site due to its location and importance. Not much has survived from the original monastery to the present day.
