Křtiny
Křtiny, hidden on the upper edge of the karst Josefov valley, is an ideal tourist and pilgrimage destination and a starting point for exploring the central part of the Moravian Karst. Its unusually rich history, dating back to 1237, and centuries-old Marian pilgrimage tradition are complemented by the immediate vicinity of the Moravian Karst and its rocky romantic valleys, caves, sinkholes and dips.
Křtiny has always been one of the most important European Marian pilgrimage sites. Two churches have stood here since the Middle Ages. The smaller of the two churches contained the so-called “miraculous image”, a Gothic statue of Our Lady of Křtiny, which is said to have attracted crowds of believers to Křtiny since 1210. In 1718, the growing interest of pilgrims prompted the Premonstratensians of Zabrdovice to completely rebuild the complex according to the design of the most important Czech Baroque architect Jan Blažej Santini Aichl. His ambition was to create a monumental church and to integrate it sensitively into the Křtiny valley. He designed an ingenious symmetrical composition, built on the plan of a Greek cross. The temple is open to the public all year round. Thanks to this, it nowadays serves not only important religious events and extraordinary spiritual activities, but also concerts and lovers of architecture and history.

Information from history
HISTORY OF THE PILGRIMAGE SITE
According to an old legend, the saints Cyril and Methodius and their disciples baptized in the valley. This history has given the place the ancient name Vallis babtismi - the valley of baptism. Its dominant feature is undoubtedly the Church of the Name of the Virgin Mary, where pilgrimage masses are regularly held.
