Located just a short walk from the Žďár Chateau estate, the Lower Cemetery (Dolní hřbitov) is one of the most remarkable and unusual Baroque monuments in Central Europe. Built in 1709 under the vision of Abbot Václav Vejmluva and designed by the genius architect Jan Blažej Santini-Aichl, this unique burial ground was originally constructed as a plague cemetery during an impending epidemic, although the plague ultimately spared the town.
Santini designed the cemetery based on rich mystical symbolism and precise geometry, structuring the outer wall in the shape of an equilateral triangle to symbolize the Holy Trinity. Three oval chapels were placed at the vertices of the triangle, creating a harmonious layout centered around an inner courtyard.
