Discover a Piece of History in Žeravice: The Jan Amos Komenský Memorial
Nestled in the charming South Moravian village of Žeravice, the Jan Amos Komenský Memorial offers a profound journey into a pivotal period of Czech history and the life of one of its most influential figures. This unique site, dedicated to the "Teacher of Nations," stands on the very ground where a former Catholic church, through the patronage of the local lords, became a vibrant gathering place for the persecuted Bohemian Brethren (Čeští bratři).
Imagine the hushed intensity as members of the Czech Brethren sought refuge and solace here, enduring constant persecution in the 17th century. This pivotal event in his life, which set him on a path to becoming the last bishop of the Unity of the Brethren and a world-renowned philosopher, pedagogue, and theologian, is commemorated here.
During a 1974 reconstruction, fascinating fragments of what appear to be ancient church texts were uncovered on the niche walls, adding another layer to the building’s rich narrative. Today, the memorial’s exhibition delves deep into the life and work of the Czech Brethren in Žeravice, offering insights into their struggles and resilience. Nestled in the historical heart of Žeravice, the Church of the Centenary of Saint John the Baptist is more than just a place of worship; it's a living testament to centuries of local history, resilience, and breathtaking Baroque artistry. This magnificent church, originally consecrated in 1738, stands on ground steeped in the village's past, dating back to the first mention of Žeravice in 1235.
Commissioned by its patron, Hanuš Dětřich Petřvaldský, the church was a labor of love, completed in 1729. Its story is deeply intertwined with the powerful local noble families, particularly the Petřvaldský family. Notably, Marie Crescencie z Petřvaldu, daughter-in-law of the founder, lived opposite the church in the Žeravice chateau and became its devoted patroness until her death in 1775. Her final resting place lies fittingly in a tomb at the very center of the church, a silent witness to its enduring legacy.
Though it suffered a devastating fire in 1775, the church was swiftly and beautifully restored, a testament to the community’s dedication. Its grand re-consecration in 1803, complete with a newly acquired main altar, marked a triumphant return.
Architectural Highlights to Discover:
As you approach, prepare to be captivated by its striking Baroque architecture. The church is a unique, unoriented cross-shaped building with a distinctive half-circular presbytery and an imposing prismatic tower dominating the eastern facade. Marvel at the intricate details of its concave facade, the elegant stone portal with its ornate decorations, and the vibrant play of light and shadow on its meticulously crafted lezene frames and cornices. The tower itself is a masterpiece, crowned by a picturesque Baroque copper dome with a lantern, a symbol that graces many a postcard of the region.
Inside, the central nave forms an irregular octagon, beautifully vaulted with a “Prussian cap” (pruská placka) – a sophisticated Baroque ceiling technique. Your eyes will be drawn to the beautifully arched windows, the intricate pilasters, and the serene atmosphere that pervades the entire space. Don’t miss the side chapels and the oratories on the upper floor, which open directly into the main nave, creating a sense of spaciousness and grandeur.

A Baroque Masterpiece in Osvětimany: The Church of Saint Havel
Perched majestically above the charming village of Osvětimany, the Church of Saint Havel stands as a prominent landmark and a testament to over 300 years of rich history and stunning Baroque architecture. This magnificent church was built on the site of an earlier wooden church, sadly lost to fire, with construction beginning in 1674. Its creation was financially supported by Jan Dětřich Petřvaldský z Petřvaldu, whose family crest – a proud peacock and column – is still visible in the stone archway above the main entrance, a timeless mark of their patronage. The church itself was blessed and consecrated in 1691, beginning its long and storied life.
The Church of Saint Havel is a remarkable example of Baroque design, featuring a centrally oriented layout on the plan of an equilateral cross. Its unique design includes transverse arms that are shortened and gracefully rounded into niches, creating a sense of intimate grandeur. Rising majestically above these cross arms is a soaring dome, drawing your gaze upwards. A “Chapel of Souls” (dušičková kaple) was later added to the southern nave, enriching the church’s spiritual space. Dominating the western facade is a robust, 38-meter-high prismatic tower, crowned by an elegant pear-shaped roof, a distinctive silhouette against the sky.
Step inside, and you’ll be transported to the 18th century, as most of the church’s interior furnishings hail from this period. The main altar is a focal point, featuring the relics of Saint Prokop the Martyr, Saint Urban, and Saint Theodora, beautifully framed by the altar painting of Saint Havel, the church’s patron saint. The sacred space is further adorned by two side altars dedicated to Saint John of Nepomuk and Saint Andrew the Apostle. Don’t miss the exquisite wooden pulpit, dating back to the 17th century, balanced by the baptismal font opposite it. Your eyes will also be drawn to the vibrant stained-glass windows and the impressive twelve-stop organ, crafted by the Nový Jičín organ builder Karel Neusser in 1889. Look up to admire the captivating frescoes in the church dome, painted in 1906 by Josef Kubíček from Uherské Hradiště, depicting the revered Saints Cyril and Methodius, active on the nearby Saint Clement Mountain.
Beneath the 19th-century ceramic paving, behind the presbytery, lies a sealed crypt – the resting place of local priests, officials from the Buchlov manor, and monks, adding another layer of historical intrigue. The parish of Osvětimany and its church were historically under the patronage of local lords residing in the fortified stronghold, later falling under the patronage of the Buchlov manor. Today, it belongs to the Roman Catholic Deanery in Uherské Hradiště, within the Olomouc Archbishopric.

Osvětimany Dam: Your Refreshing Escape in the Chřiby Hills
Nestled at the southern edge of the picturesque Chřiby Nature Park, just a kilometer northwest of the market town of Osvětimany, lies the beautiful Osvětimany Dam. This serene water reservoir is a true hidden gem, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty and recreational opportunities for everyone.
Tucked away in the charming valley of the Klimentský stream, with the smaller Klimentský Pond just upstream, the Osvětimany Dam boasts a generous 10.5-hectare water surface. It’s an inviting spot for a refreshing swim, peaceful canoe trips across its calm waters, or a relaxing day of fishing. Anglers will particularly appreciate the convenient freezing boxes available at the nearby recreational center.
For sun-worshippers, lovely small beaches line primarily the left bank of the dam, inviting you to lay back and soak up the sun. This bank is also graced by a blue-marked hiking trail that winds its way from Osvětimany to the historic Koryčany Chapel, perfect for a scenic stroll. Just above the dam’s embankment, you’ll find a kiosk, offering refreshments during the summer season – ideal for a quick bite or a cold drink after your activities.
Originally built on the Klimentský stream between 1980 and 1985, this reservoir, covering 6.6 hectares, was initially used for irrigation, fishing, and recreation, holding an impressive 312,400 cubic meters of water. After three decades without major maintenance, it underwent a significant reconstruction, managed by Lesy ČR (Forests of the Czech Republic) and completed in November 2017. Today, the dam is not only a recreational paradise but also a thriving ideal habitat for aquatic plants and animals. It’s even home to the specially protected painter’s mussel (velevrub malířský), which was carefully relocated during reconstruction and returned once the reservoir was refilled, showcasing a commitment to local biodiversity.
