Cyrilometodějská stezka ... Aktuálně #02/2021

Vážení čtenáři,

Let us bring you information about the European Cultural Route of Saints Cyril and Methodius (ECRSCM) mostly from the month of August and wish you a pleasant reading.

Long-distance hiker and writer Christine Thürmer on the Cyril and Methodius Route!

In August, the well-known long-distance hiker  Christine Thürmer set off on her adventure along the Cyril and Methodius Route from Czestochowa to Mariazell and will continue along the Marian Way. Known for her epic journeys across continents, Christine is about to explore the rich cultural, historical and spiritual heritage of Central and Eastern Europe. Christine's journey will take approximately 3.5 months and cover an impressive 2,200 kilometres (map). She carries everything she needs, including a tent, on her back and reports her experiences almost daily on social media. In Zlín and Velehrad, Petr Slinták, the National Coordinator of the Cyril and Methodius Route in the Czech Republic, spoke with her: "Christine has a varied pilgrimage experience. She has walked in dozens of countries, not only in Europe. That is why she is a welcome source of inspiration and information for us. During our meeting she gave me some useful reflections and practical tips. She also sees the Cyril and Methodius Route as an inspiring route linking two famous European pilgrimage sites: Czestochowa and Mariazell. Since Velehrad is not well known in Western Europe, this north-south branch of the trail offers the opportunity for pilgrims from German-speaking countries to get to know it."

The Battle of Veligrad has been fought for the 20th time!

On the weekend of 9-10 August, the 20th edition of the living history event "Veligrad - the Battle for the Hillfort 2025" took place in the Archaeological Open-air Musem Modrá and the Cyril and Methodius Route was there through a stand with printed materials about the journey in the footsteps of Cyril and Methodius across Europe. It was great to see history come alive and see adults and children getting involved in the battles and demonstrations of early medieval life.

Evropská kulturní cesta sv. Cyrila a Metoděje is an interest association of legal entities based in the Czech Republic, founded in 2013. It promotes the living Cyrillo-Methodian legacy and values based on respect and dialogue between people of different cultures and faiths. As a cultural tourism product, the Cyril and Methodius Route was awarded the title of a  Cultural Route of the Council of Europe in 2021. The Association European Cultural Route of Sts. Cyril and Methodius is responsible for its management and marketing.

The Cultural Routes programme, launched by the Council of Europe in 1987, demonstrates in a visible way, by means of a journey through space and time, how the heritage of the different countries and cultures of Europe represent a shared cultural heritage. The Cultural Routes support the mission of the Council of Europe in promoting democracy, human rights and the rule of law across Europe and beyond. They promote awareness of Europe’s common heritage and put into practice cultural democracy and cultural diversity, dialogue, and mutual exchange across boundaries and centuries within Europe as well as with other countries and regions. As of 2025, there are 49 certified Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe (www.coe.int/routes).
