History of the Site

The history of the center is intrinsically linked to the archaeological discoveries made in the area, specifically on the grounds of the former “Na Valách” brewery. In the mid-20th century, extensive excavations led by archaeologists from the Moravian Museum revealed the foundations of a settlement that was a major power center of Great Moravia. The site, which dates from the 9th century, was part of a sprawling fortified area that included a religious complex, workshops, and residential zones.

The most significant find was the remains of a stone church, believed to be one of the oldest in the Czech Republic and a centerpiece of the Great Moravian state’s ecclesiastical life. The discovery of a cemetery with a large number of graves and a church, along with rich artifacts—including Frankish swords, axes, and jewelry—provided irrefutable evidence of a highly developed civilization with strong ties to Western Europe.

The Center’s Development

In response to these groundbreaking discoveries, a decision was made to build a museum directly over the archaeological site to protect and display the findings in their original context. The first exhibition was opened to the public in the 1960s. Over the years, the center has undergone several modernizations and expansions to incorporate new research and technologies.

In 2014, the site was officially renamed the Memorial of Great Moravia – Cyril and Methodius Centre, to reflect its role as a key point of reference for the arrival of the Byzantine missionaries in 863 AD. The new designation solidified its status as a central hub for studying and commemorating the work of Saints Cyril and Methodius and the lasting impact of their mission on Slavic culture and literacy. The center now serves as a modern and interactive exhibition space that guides visitors through the rich history of the Great Moravian Empire and its spiritual and cultural heritage.
