The location of the Smolenice Castle is on the northern side of the village. It was built at the beginning of our century on the ruins of an old castle. The current Smolenice Castle was built at the beginning of our century by the owner of the Smolenice and Dobrovodské estates, Count Jozef Pálffy the Elder. The entrance is secured by two gates, an old wooden gate and a newer gate made of iron pipes. Count Pálffy had two plans made for the construction of the castle, one in Vienna and the other in Budapest. He chose the one that most resembled the castle in Kreuzenstein near Vienna, owned by his mother, Countess Vilczek. The outbreak of the First World War in the summer of 1914 was the reason for the cessation of construction work on the castle. Although the castle was not completed, many tourists and excursionists came here. After the liberation in 1945, the state became the owner of the castle. The completed and modernized castle was handed over to the Slovak Academy by the Slovak National Council of Sciences on the day of its birth, June 26, 1953. Since then, Smolenice Castle has become the Home of Scientific Workers of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. An integral part of Smolenice Castle is a vast English park.”
