 However, the site was only developed into the form whose remains are visible today (particularly the clearly discernible defensive ramparts) during the era of Great Moravia. At that time, the Zámčisko hillfort most likely served as a refuge for the inhabitants of the area comprising present-day Modra and its surroundings. The original “Modra locals” thus used the hillfort as a sanctuary against enemies during turbulent times. Whenever there was a threat of enemy invasion into their unprotected settlements, the inhabitants would retreat to the fortified Zámčisko, where they stood a much better chance of defending themselves. Once the enemy had departed, they would return to their homes. The hillfort remained in use even after the establishment of the Hungarian state. The 13th century, in particular, saw numerous historical events where Zámčisko could have played a vital role—such as the Mongol invasion, the conflicts between Hungary and the last of the Babenbergs following that invasion, the wars between Hungary and the Kingdom of Bohemia, or the uprising of Duke Opur against the central government.

The hillfort was in use during these periods, as evidenced by various military-related archaeological finds such as spurs, weapon fragments, horseshoes, horseshoe nails, and three arrowheads. Various utilitarian objects were also discovered here: an iron knife and plowshares, a medieval hammer, a fire-steel, a sickle, and others. The hillfort was destroyed by fire.
