Znojmo-Hradiště

The ancient settlement of Hradiště is situated on the top of a prominent and strategically important rock promontory on the north west area of the town of Znojmo, in the picturesque natural framework of the Podyjí – Protected Landscape Area. In the centre of the area are spacious buildings of the Red Star Crusader presbytery and the Church of St. Hypolytus, which gave the name to the first settlement.

The hillfort, which reaches 332 m above sea level, rises directly opposite Znojmo Castle and is separated from the city in the northeast by the deeply incised, romantic valley of the Granicky Stream. Its southern sides slope steeply down to the Dyje River and in the south-west to the valley of the Pivovarský Stream. Only from the north-west it is open to the slightly undulating terrain and therefore relatively accessible. Hradiště is a place with more than a thousand years of history. It offers valuable architectural monuments, beautiful nature, breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside and in summer also a visit to archaeological excavations. There are several hiking trails and the frequented Podyjí cycling trail running through it.

Information from history

History of the Hillfort

The important Great Moravian castle at Hradiště near Znojmo, towering a hundred metres above the deeply incised valleys of the Dyje River and the Gránický Brook, was probably fortified as early as the turn of the 8th and 9th centuries with a ten-metre-high belt of thick stone and clay fortifications with an outer moat. This mighty wall surrounded the entire settlement of over twenty hectares at that time. Inside, the Great Moravian city was divided into two parts by another wall. The remains of the fortification, which experienced the cruelty of the Hungarian nomadic hordes in the first half of the 10th century, are still preserved in the form of an earthen rampart on the northern edge of Hradiště above the slope to the Gránický valley.

How to get to Hradiště?

By bus: the IDS JMK lines No.801 (only to Hradiště) and No.817 (further via Mašovice to Čížov) leave from the railway station in Znojmo and continue through the town centre along Pražská Street, where they turn to Hradiště.
By car: This road turns off Pražská Street in Znojmo (part of the main Znojmo – Moravské Budějovice – Jihlava route).
On the bike: The marked cycle trail No. 5000 from Znojmo passes through the village, which continues in two branches either through Králův stolec or through Mašovice further to Podmolí, where it connects to the dense network of cycle paths in the Podyjí National Park. The Route of Six Cities cycle circuit also passes through Hradiště.
On foot: In the Gránický valley, the yellow trail separates from the green trail, which climbs to Hradiště via gentler serpentines over the valley of the Dyje. Both signs from Hradiště continue along two different paths to Králův stolec. From there, only the green trail continues to the Andělský mlýn (Andělský mill) near Mašovice, where it crosses another hiking trail. From here it is possible to continue either further along the green trail back towards Znojmo under Cínová hora or to Podmolí to the dense network of hiking trails through the Podyjí region.
