Staré Město

Staré Město, with its roots tracing back to the 6th century, is home to several ancient agricultural and artisan settlements. Among the most notable are the Na Valách and Na Špitálkách settlements. Near the churches of St. Michael and St. Vitus, archaeologists have uncovered the foundations of four Great Moravian churches with burial sites, as well as specialized craft workshops from the 9th to 10th centuries. The extensive and rich archaeological findings, including buildings, utilitarian objects, armaments, and jewelry, highlight Staré Město as a significant center of the Great Moravian Empire. Plan your visit to Staré Město and delve into its fascinating history and archaeological treasures!

In the 9th century, Staré Město was a key part of Velihrad, one of the two main centers of Great Moravia. This historic area also included a settlement in what is now the center of Uherské Hradiště and a religious hub on the heights of Sady. Staré Město was home to a significant power complex, featuring a stone palace for the Moravian princes and a rotunda. In Na Valách, you can find the largest Moravian necropolis, which once housed another church. Additionally, a small church with a burial ground was located on the southwestern edge of the town, in an area known as “Špitálky.” Explore Staré Město and immerse yourself in its fascinating past!
