Discover the Church of Sts. Cyril and Methodius in Terchová, since 2019 the Diocesan Sanctuary – the largest church in Slovakia dedicated to the Slavic apostles and co-patrons of Europe – is an architectural landmark of Terchová and the Jánošík region.

It has long been a sought-after pilgrimage and tourist destination, visited by countless visitors from home and abroad. The church project was architecturally designed and the construction site was selected by the renowned architect Milan Michal Harminc. The foundation stone of the church was laid in 1942 and on October 9, 1949, the new church was consecrated by the Bishop of Nitra, Eduard Nécsey.

 

Terchová is a village in northern Slovakia in the Žilina District. It is a typical Kopaničarska village with a large number of settlements. Due to its geographical location, it is known as the tourist center of Malá Fatra and a cultural area of ​​the Žilina region with regular events. The village of Terchová has existed for over four hundred years. However, the area on which it is located was known to people even earlier.

It forms the entrance to the Vrátná Valley. The village is known mainly for its cultural tradition and as a tourist center. Since the early 1960s, the cultural festival Jánošík’s Days has been held annually.

An important part of Terchová folklore is folk music. The music was passed down orally from generation to generation. Terchová music has been on the list of the World Oral and Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity since 2013.

The Parish Church of Sts. Cyril and Methodius stands in the center of Selce, atop a gentle rise and surrounded by a stone enclosure that gives the site a fortified character. The single-nave church — originally dedicated to All Saints — dates back to the period of High Gothic architecture in the first half of the 14th century. It appears that the original sacred structure was what is now the sacristy, which can be dated to the second half of the 13th century. Come raggiungere la chiesa?

La chiesa si trova nel centro del comune, sulla strada principale Svätý Martin. È possibile parcheggiare sulla strada opposta Jánošikova, dove c'è un parcheggio riservato. A circa 100 m dalla chiesa, nel centro, si trova la fermata dell'autobus Terchová, dove circola un servizio regolare.
